Quiet reading time
Reading
and Responding

Each week Fellows will spend some time in and out of class reading research-based texts on writing and/or the teaching of writing. Each week small groups will meet to identify the reading that week and for discussion of that reading.

Discussion of the readings will take place at least one afternoon per week. The purpose of the discussions is to examine and learn more about what is currently being written about the teaching of writing and how that enhances and/or challenges our own views and practices.

The groups can be "permanent" (for the entire institute) or can be reformed as desired. These discussions should provide opportunities for further reflection and inquiry by each member.

At the end of the institute, groups will be responsible for sharing some of the insights gained from their reading and discussions with the entire group.

A variety of books are also available to borrow from the UPWP Lending Library throughout the institute. These books may help develop the research base for teaching demonstrations. Please feel free to use the library to best meet your needs.
